Man helping woman on the side of the road struck by alleged drunk driver

REVERE (MyFoxboston.com) -- An act of kindness turned into a crime scene after a man trying to help someone on the side of the road was suddenly hit by an alleged drunk driver.

The man, Amaury Ramirez, was heading home from his Uber job in Revere when he saw 20-year-old Naisa Polanco pulled over on the shoulder on Route 1 near the Route 60 exit.

Ramirez's wife, Rosemary Pimtel, said he was trying to change Polanco's tire as she waited for AAA.

Police say Nicholas Schaeneman slammed into them. Investigators on scene say he had blood shot eyes, and reeked of alcohol.

Ramirez's family is speechless after learning what police found in the car. Troopers found two small airplane bottles of vodka in the center console and a case of beer in the trunk.

Ramirez, a father of three, remained in critical condition at Mass. General Hospital in Boston Monday night. Now the family is holding onto faith.

"He's trying to open his eyes, I know he's trying to be strong," Pimtel said.
