WESTBOROUGH, Mass. — A man has been charged with domestic assault and battery after police found his wife dead.

Michael Sugarman was still wearing hospital clothes when he walked into court. He was taken to the hospital after police found him laying in the kitchen with a knife in his neck and his wife, 36-year-old Kelley Sugarman dead, in the bedroom.

Their 5-year-old daughter was found earlier in the morning wandering the streets and she led officers back to their home.

Sugarman was ordered to be held without bail. The district attorney said the couple was in extreme financial difficulties. Sugarman said he was off his medications at the time of the incident.

"He made statements on the way that he was off his medication when this happened. And he made several inquiries as to how his wife was," prosecutor Terry McLaughlin said. "Yesterday they had information the couple was experiencing extreme financial difficulty and that had been the source of a number of arguments and fights between the two." p

Famly members filled the small courtroom, but after the hearing was over, they refused to speak to us. p

Michael Sugarman is due back in court next week for a dangerousness hearing. p

But that could be delayed. p

The charges against him could be upgraded at any time.
