WASTHINGTON D.C. — Massachusetts Representative Katherine Clark of Melrose has been elected to Assistant Speaker of the House of Representatives. With that, Clark becomes the number 4 Democrat in the chamber.
Clark beat out Representative David Cicilline of Rhode Island, 135 to 92.

“We are going to see and help the American people with the pain their suffering. The loss of life and livelihood from this pandemic and the racial and economic injustices that they are facing.”
Following the vote by the Democratic Caucus, Clark said she was honored and humbled by the election.
“And I can tell you this about our caucus, we are the guardians of people’s hopes and aspirations and we are going to be the unified engine for change,” Clark said.
Clark was first elected to Congress in 2013 during the special election to fill Sen. Markey’s House seat. Most recently, she served as vice chair of the House Democratic Caucus.
House Democrats also voted to keep Nancy Pelosi as their leader and nominee for speaker. A full House floor vote for Speakership will happen in January.
