WRENTHAM, Mass. — A hazmat situation at the water treatment plant in Wrentham sent two workers to the hospital with possible chemical burns early Tuesday morning, according to fire officials.

The fire department says the call came in around 9:20 a.m. Tuesday.

The two workers, ages 40 and 23, were injured when potassium hydroxide spilled at the treatment plant on Franklin Street, a fire official told Boston 25 News.

Potassium hydroxide causes chemical burns when it contacts the skin, the fire department says the spill was minor but both workers, identified only as two men, had burns to the head and face. Officials say both workers were wearing protective eye equipment.

The spill was under control quickly, according to the fire department and the scene was cleared just before 11:30 a.m.

The cause remains under investigation.
