Worcester man arrested for allegedly driving vehicle toward WPI football field, wielding hammer

WORCESTER, Mass. — A Worcester man is facing charges after he was arrested Thursday night for allegedly driving his vehicle down a walkway, nearly making his way onto Worcester Polytechnic Institute’s football field during a scrimmage.

While the scrimmage was wrapping up and people were heading back to the nearby parking garage off Salisbury Street, witnesses saw a Toyota Corolla stop in front of the doors of the campus’s athletic training building. The driver then got out of the vehicle, holding a hammer. But he was quickly disarmed by an athletic equipment manager.

The Worcester Police Department told Boston 25 News the man was arrested shortly after by Worcester Police and WPI campus police.

It was later determined that the car matched the description of another vehicle with the same license plate that was involved in an earlier hit-and-run that happened on King Phillip Road.

Police added that the incident remains under investigation at this time.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates as more information becomes available.
