HULL, Mass. — It’s just one block removed from Hull’s main drag, but the neighborhood along Kingsley Road is completely different in character, neighbors say.

“It’s a residential neighborhood, so there are a lot of children, a lot of kids,” said Irene Coombs, who moved to the seaside town from Newton in 2017. “So you just kind of want to go slow.”

Whether a driver wasn’t going slow enough Saturday night isn’t known. But around 7 pm, police say a woman on a motorized scooter went down where Kingsley intersects Sumner Street. That driver told police she was hit by a box truck which fled the scene.

One neighbor tells Boston 25 News she did see a small truck, light in color, driving quickly away shortly after the accident.

Asked whether the vehicle seemed to be purposefully fleeing, she said, “Oh, yeah.”

That neighbor said she found the scooter driver lying on the side of the road, her face covered in blood. She called 9-1-1. The woman was taken to an area hospital. Police say her injuries turned out to be not life-threatening.

Some neighbors suggest Saturday’s brush with tragedy should serve as a wake-up call to do something about speeding on Kingsley Road.

“I think there needs to be more of a police presence around here, especially with the children,” said Kelly Cullivan, who was at a nearby neighborhood park with her children. “People fly. They just drive too fast. They’re either on their cell phones or they’re preoccupied, not paying attention to the road.”

Cullivan called it unsettling that such an accident could happen so early in the evening, given darkness is settling in now at a time when children are still out playing. For one thing, she thinks police ought to install light-up speedometer signs along Kingsley Road.

“Maybe just something like that, so people slow down,” she said. “So they can see their own speed and it kind of flashes and it gives them a little warning.”

Irene Coombs, who lives right on the corner where the incident happened, said there are things about Kingsley Road that, unfortunately, make it conducive for speeding.

“I think people do sometimes go a little bit faster on Kingsley because it’s kind of a straightaway,” Coombs said. “There’s not as many stop signs along Kingsley.”

Police are described the box truck as being lightly colored with front-end damage. The crash remains under investigation by the Hull Police Department. If anyone knows any details, they can contact Hull Police at (781) 925-1212.
