CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — Crews rescued a woman found unconscious in a house fire near Harvard Square in Cambridge early Wednesday morning that left three firefighters with minor injuries.
A neighbor reported the fire in a two-story home at 34 Buckingham Street sometime around 5:30 a.m., Gerry Mahoney, the acting fire chief said.
Firefighters found the unconscious woman on the second floor, Mahoney said, and she was taken to the hospital in cardiac arrest. Three firefighters were also transported to the hospital with a variety of minor injuries from a ceiling collapse in the house, he said.
The fire was knocked down in about 45 minutes and Mahoney called it a “heroic effort.”
On Wednesday afternoon, Mahoney confirmed the woman died from her injuries.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
