Warmer water brings tropical sharks to Cape Cod

FALMOUTH, Mass. — A late-night fishing trip off Cape Cod turned into the catch of a lifetime—and one that’s raising new questions about New England’s changing waters.

The brothers had set out for a night of shark fishing with a couple of rods baited with dead eels when one of them suddenly bent over.

“I got behind it and started fighting the fish. And I was like, you know, it felt small, didn’t feel too big.”

When they finally brought the animal close enough to identify it, they couldn’t believe what they were seeing.

“This is definitely my most memorable catch in the Northeast.”

Tiger sharks are typically found in warmer waters, including the Caribbean and other tropical and subtropical regions.

Catching one from the shore off Cape Cod is highly unusual.

“It’s a southern warm water species being caught on rod and reel off the beach on Cape Cod, which just doesn’t happen.”

After snapping a few photos, the brothers released the shark back into the water.

Marine scientists say the sighting may be part of a larger environmental shift.

Researchers note that tiger sharks have occasionally been found in Massachusetts waters before. What’s different now is where they’re showing up—and how young they are.

“We know tiger sharks have always come up to Massachusetts, Cape Cod. But what’s changing is these juveniles that we’re seeing inshore.”

Scientists say warming ocean temperatures are making local waters more suitable for juvenile tiger sharks. Summer water temperatures are now climbing into the upper 70s and are expected to reach the low 80s—conditions that closely match the habitat these young sharks prefer.

“The water temperature is getting up into the high 70s. And we’ll eventually hit the low 80s. And that’s perfect for these little juvenile tiger sharks.”

Marine experts also say the area where the shark was caught could be developing into a nursery habitat for juvenile tiger sharks as ocean conditions continue to change.

If that trend continues, researchers say similar sightings may become more common in the years ahead, offering another visible sign of how climate change is reshaping marine ecosystems along the New England coast.
