MANSFIELD, Mass. — An investigation is underway after a five-vehicle crash left two people dead and two others injured early Saturday morning in Mansfield, Massachusetts State Police said.
A 27-year-old man and a 32-year-old woman were pronounced dead on the scene after being involved in a multi-vehicle crash just before 4 a.m.
According to state police, both victims were driving their own vehicles when the crash occurred at the 29.8-mile marker along Route 495 in Mansfield.
One of the vehicles was a gray Honda Civic operated by a 32-year-old Dorchester woman who had succumbed to her injuries and a 27-year-old Norton man, operating a VW Passat, who was also determined to be deceased on scene. Their identities are not being released as next-of-kin, police said.
When Troopers arrived on the scene they discovered three vehicles in the right breakdown lane and two vehicles in the center median.
A 44-year-old man from Brockton and a 46-year-old woman from Attleboro sustained minor injuries from the crash and were transported to Good Samaritan Hospital. The fifth operator, a 19-year-old man from Cumberland, Rhode Island, sustained no injuries.
All three southbound travel lanes were closed for nearly 4 hours due to investigation and cleanup efforts.
There is no additional information at this time. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
