BROOKLINE, Mass. — PGA Tour star Tiger Woods on Tuesday announced that he will not be competing when the U.S. Open returns to The Country Club in Brookline next week.
“I previously informed the USGA that I will not be competing in the @usopengolf as my body needs more time to get stronger for major championship golf,” Woods said in a tweet.
Woods withdrew from the PGA Championship in May after struggling in the third round of that major. It was only his second major after suffering serious injuries in a crash last February.
As of Monday, 91 players were on the exempt list for the 122nd U.S. Open, including Woods.
On Monday, organizers of the US Open sent a statement to Boston 25 saying Wood was in the field of players who had filed an entry to compete in the 2022 tournament but added, “Like all players, he reserves the right to withdraw at any time.”
Woods had earned his U.S. Open exemption with his 2019 win at The Masters.
The US Open runs from June 13-June 19th at The Country Club. Monday through Wednesday are practice rounds. Tournament play starts on Thursday and ends on Father’s Day June 19th.
Organizers are urging Boston area golf fans to plan ahead for travel to the championship June 13-19.
