A 19-year-old duck hunter was rescued after falling into freezing temperatures in Marion Monday morning.
The teen was hunting from his boat near Silvershell Beach shortly before 8:00 a.m. when he fell into the water. The teen’s friend, who was hunting from the shore, noticed he was no longer in the boat and called 911.
Harbor patrols and Marion police and firefighters responded and were able to pull the hunter from 34-degree water. Officials say he had already begun to suffer from severe hypothermia.
Once ashore, firefighters gave the hunter warming blankets and IV warming liquids.
The man was taken to Tobey Hospital in Wareham.
His condition was unknown as of Monday afternoon but first responders say his friend’s quick thinking likely saved the young hunter’s life.
“Clearly, it was a good heads up that the younger individual was able to make a quick phone call to 911 to get resources out there,” Fire Chief Jackvony said. “I’m happy he made that call immediately. It doesn’t take long for hypothermia to kick in.”
