ANDOVER, Mass. — An 18-year-old suffered life-threatening injuries when he crashed into the back of a tractor-trailer on Interstate 93 in Andover late Sunday night, authorities said.
Troopers responding to a report of a crash on the northbound side of the highway shortly before 10 p.m. Sunday found a male driver from Methuen in need of emergency medical treatment, according to Massachusetts State Police.
The victim, whose name hasn’t been released, was flown to a Boston hospital.
The scene of the crash was cleared shortly before 1 a.m.
The highway was shut down for hours to allow for the helicopter to land and an investigation to take place.
A preliminary investigation suggested that the victim was driving at a high rate of speed before slamming into the back of the tractor-trailer, according to state police.
The crash remains under investigation.
