SOUTH BOSTON — Boston 25 News has obtained a new surveillance video showing the moments leading up to a Boston University Professor’s deadly fall back in September. This video gives a better idea of how David Jones fell to his death. We edited out the part showing the actual fall because it may be too graphic for some audience members.

Jones, an avid runner, was out for a run when he fell through the stairs near the JFK / UMass train station. That staircase was taken down shortly after the September 11, 2021 incident. The area around it is now completely fenced off.
Jones entered the staircase from the bottom and walked up. He squeezed by a fence at the bottom of the staircase. It remains unclear why he did that.
Boston 25 also obtained several pictures of the scene. Some of the photos show the rusted-out staircase. Others show several treads that had fallen to the ground below. Another shows the fence blocking the stairs but with a gap that was easily accessible.

In January, Suffolk County DA, Kevin Hayden announced that his office had completed its investigation into the tragic death of Jones, saying there are no criminal charges being filed and that his fall is ruled an accident.

However, an attorney for the family says it was an avoidable accident that took a good man’s life. The attorney provided a statement:
“The DA’s decision not to bring any criminal charges in this matter in no way exonerates those responsible for this wholly avoidable accident that took a good man’s life. There was not a single sign that would warn a person as to the grave but the hidden danger in this structure, and certainly, no attempt was ever made to convey to the public that those dangers were potentially lethal,” said Darin Colucci of Colucci & Marcus.
According to the death certificate, the cause of death was blunt force injuries. Jones was a husband and father of three.
