MEDFORD, Mass. — Eleven people were displaced and two pets were killed in a fire that tore through a home in Medford on Wednesday morning.

The fire broke out at a home on Fern Road just after 6 a.m., which is located less than a mile from Interstate 93. Smoke could be seen for miles as firefighters battled the blaze.

Six children and five adults escaped the burning home by the time crews arrived, but a dog and a bird perished in the fire, according to Medford Deputy Fire Chief Tom Brennan.

Brennan noted that two families and visitors were staying at the home.

Video from the scene showed raging flames shooting from solar panels on the roof of the home.

“Once it got up into the attic, it was very stubborn,” Brennan said of the fire.

Brennan noted that the home is likely a total loss.

There were no reported injuries in the fire.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
