Mass. — Have you noticed a turkey trotting through your neighborhood? MassWildlife officials are asking you to speak up.
The annual turkey census is underway. You don’t have to know the bird’s occupation or how many kids they have. MassWildlife just wants to know how many birds you saw, where you saw them and if they were a male or female.
Taken every summer, reports from the public allow government officials to estimate turkey populations, determine productivity and estimate their stress levels.
Male turkeys, “Toms”, are the once that sport that iconic red “beard” on their beaks and strut around with their tail feathers out. Females, “Hens”, are typically smaller and duller in color.
Turkey sightings can be reported using this form.
This is a developing story. Check back for updates as more information becomes available.
