STOUGHTON, Mass. — A kayaker has been hospitalized after reports that they were in distress at a Stoughton pond, the police department announced.
Earlier Thursday afternoon, first responders were dispatched to Ames Pond on Highland Street following reports of a kayaker in distress in the water.
Public safety personnel are on scene and conducting a search operation.
Stoughton Fire Chief Michael Carroll said that responding to an incident like this “catches you off guard.”
“The beach isn’t even open, it’s locked up right, we kind of have a mindset we know when the lifeguards are on duty, off duty, they call us right,” Carroll said. “This kind of threw me off a little bit, but even then, all the resources are so available and so quick to respond and so quick to help.”
Police announced that at the time, Highland Street was closed between West Street and Canton Street and asked the public to avoid the area. The road has since been reopened.
No further details are available at this time, and an investigation remains ongoing. Boston 25 will update you with the latest when available.
