CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — The body pulled from the Charles River after an extensive search on Wednesday was that of a 41-year-old man believed to be homeless, state police said.
His name was not released on Wednesday and foul play is not suspected, state police said.
Dive teams were called to the river shortly after 11 a.m. Wednesday for reports of a man in distress in the water at the BU Bridge/railroad bridge.
Boston Fire Deputy Chief Michael Doherty told Boston 25 News bystanders called authorities after they saw a man flailing in the water.
Cambridge and Boston fire departments searched the waters before locating and removing a man’s body just before 1:30 p.m.
“We were able to locate a victim after a short period of time, and we turned it over to police and it’s actually a police matter now,” Doherty said.
He said about a dozen divers responded to search for the man in about 10-12 feet of water.
“We sent out a signal and a lot of off-duty dive team members responded,” Doherty said. “There’s very little visibility so it is really difficult I would say.”
