SALEM, Mass. — Salem police warned residents of an increase in the frequency of local coyote sightings both within Salem and in nearby communities.
Coyotes have been seen approaching people walking dogs in the South Salem/Pickman Park area, police said on Facebook.
Police also said it has been reported that coyotes appear comfortable around people.
Mass Wildlife has assembled tips to help avoid problems with coyotes.
• Remove sources of food and water, especially at night. This includes pet bowls, fallen fruit from trees, and water in bird baths.
• Secure garbage can lids or store them indoors.
• Ensure outdoor enclosures for rabbits, poultry, birds, etc. are well secured.
• Put away bird feeders and leftover poultry food at night to avoid attracting rodents and other coyote prey.
• Do not leave dogs, cats, and other pets outside unattended, especially at night.
Anyone who sees a coyote should not approach it. Instead, individuals should pick up any children or small pets and make loud noises to scare the animal away.
This is a developing story. Check back for updates as more information becomes available.
