WOONSOCKET, R.I. — A Rhode Island man was arrested Thursday after authorities say he stabbed his pregnant girlfriend to death inside an apartment that the couple shared.
William Santiago Ramos, 30, of Sayles Street in Woonsocket, is slated to be arraigned Friday on charges of domestic murder, sex offender failure to notify a change of address, and obstructing an officer in the execution of duty, according to the Woonsocket Police Department.
Officers conducting a welfare check found Ramos’ girlfriend, 29-year-old Gabriela Vallejo, suffering from multiple stab wounds to her neck in a bedroom. She was pronounced dead.
Investigators say Vallejo was “several months” pregnant.
Ramos was later found a short distance away in River Island Park, where he allegedly ran from officers and swam across the Blackstone River in an apparent attempt to evade capture.
Police say officers ultimately arrested Ramos behind homes on Front Street.
There were no additional details available.
An investigation into the deadly incident remains ongoing.
