Postal worker flown to hospital following serious accident in Medway

MEDWAY, Mass. — A postal worker was seriously injured on Friday following a two-vehicle crash on Main Street, Medway police say.

The accident happened on 30 Main Street when a pick-up truck struck the postal truck, causing it to roll over.

Robert Smith was getting ready for work when he heard the collision from inside his home, which is next door to where the crash occurred.

“We ran over. Her head was on the side, and the truck was on top of it. It was insane,” Smith said. “Just ran outside that was my first instinct. She was scared but kind of calm surprisingly.”

Witnesses tell Boston 25 that the pickup truck rear-ended the mail truck - causing it to flip over a few times, and ejecting the postal worker out of the truck and trapping her underneath.

“She was stopped a the mailbox doing her job and the truck came out of nowhere and just hit her,” Smith said.

Several bystanders, including a nurse, alongside first responders jumped in to assist the postal worker.

Medway Fire Chief Michael Fasolino said it was a tricky rescue.

“They have a side window. She rolled out the window got stuck underneath the vehicle so half the patient was inside and half was outside. Dicey extrication,” Fasolino said.

The fire chief says the woman was speaking to first responders during the rescue. They don’t typically see a USPS truck involved in a crash like this. Although she was seriously hurt, Fasolino thought this could have been a lot worse.

“She’s very lucky. She should play the lottery,” Fasolino said.

The postal worker was taken by medical helicopter to UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester with serious injuries.

A spokesperson for the postal service said that they “appreciate the quick actions of emergency responders for coming to the aid of our carrier involved in a vehicle accident today.”
