AMHERST, Mass. — A UMass Amherst student is in the hospital with serious injuries after being run down by a hit-and-run driver.
It happened Monday, at about 10:15 p.m.
The 20-year-old student was in a crosswalk on Massachusetts Avenue near Sunset Avenue when hit by an SUV traveling “at a high rate of speed.”
That crosswalk is on the UMass Amherst campus.
Police have released an image of the SUV believed to be involved. The SUV could have damage on the front-end driver’s side, due to the crash.
The SUV is either silver or white.
“We are not only appealing to the public for their help identifying the driver involved in this incident but appealing to the driver as well,” said Northwestern First Assistant District Attorney Steven Gagne. “What happened last night is likely weighing on their conscience, and this is their opportunity to do the right thing by coming forward.”
The student is being treated at Baystate Medical Center.
