PLYMOUTH, Mass. — Getting to your holiday destination may require some patience. The roads are expected to be especially leading into the long weekend.

If Cape Cod is the destination this Fourth of July, Boston’s South Shore was getting a preview of the traffic. “We are getting slammed,” said a driver. “I hate it, it’s horrible,” another driver said.

Gas prices did not deter drivers even at two dollars higher than last year. Mary Maguire is the spokesperson for AAA New England. “My advice is fill your tank early, fill it today because with demand picking up as people travel for the 4th we may see prices tick back up as well,” said Maguire.

AAA predicts Thursday and Friday afternoons as the busiest days to get around.  The timing of the holiday and the weather forecast was also fueling traffic volume. “Weather trumps everything. Weather spurs people to travel but also take day trips that may be spontaneous,” said Maguire.

Drivers all have their own strategy for navigating through back ups. “You hang on until you get to Exit 13 and then oh, oh goodness, and you stop get some water, eat something and then you make it the rest of the way to the Cape,” said one woman.

Larry lives on the Cape and thought he could bang out an appointment in Cambridge before the holiday. “We took the Mass Pike extension to the expressway, Braintree split was brutal, Derby Street was bad,” said Larry.

AAA is estimating about 1.2 million hitting the roads here in MA over the next few days.
