CAMBRIDGE, Mass — The MBTA conducted an emergency response drill Sunday morning involving a Green Line train.
The exercise took place between the newly-built Lechmere Station and the Union Square Station in the area that is being constructed as part of the Green Line Extension project.
“The learning exercise that will include a scenario in which a train is traveling outbound between Lechmere Station on the Union Square Branch,” according to a statement from the MBTA. “The train is traveling faster than the posted speed and makes contact with the train directly in front of them and derails before coming to a stop. Several passengers are injured and others must evacuate the train.”
The MBTA has some recent real-world experience dealing with a similar situation. One of its Green Line operators is facing criminal charges after a crash on the B Line of the Green Line last summer. He’s accused of traveling about three times the speed limit before crashing into another Green Line train.

“The exercise is designed to establish a learning environment for public safety officials to exercise emergency response plans, policies, and procedures as they pertain to a mass casualty event on a Green Line train on a new section of the viaduct,” according to the T.
