BOSTON — A New report puts the spotlight on a big jump in pedestrian crashes across the state. Alec Cranston sees those dangers firsthand near his Roxbury home. “I almost got hit the other day so it really is kind of dangerous,” said Cranston.

WalkBoston, a pedestrian advocacy group, released a report showing: Fatal crashes are up 35% from 2021 to 2022.

And some of the most dangerous streets in the state are in Boston including Warren Street in Roxbury.

Residents like Cranston say cars fly by.

“They go very fast. It’s very unfortunate how they think it’s a speedway,” said Cranston.

Others say even trying to cross the street at crosswalks is risky.

“It’s very hard to cross because the sign would never turn on. And when I’m trying to cross I’m dodging the cars most of the time,” said Satty Gupta of Roxbury.

Malcolm X Boulevard is another dangerous street as is Melnea Cass both are in Roxbury.

“I work at BMC. So at that corner, the lights don’t make a difference,” said Mitch Medow who lives in Boston.

The report also shows older adults are at higher risk.

  • 38% of fatal crash victims were over the age of 65
  • 60% of Massachusetts’ fatal pedestrian crashes occurred in the dark
  • And nearly 10% were hit-and-run crashes

WalkBoston is calling upon MassDot to release an action plan for safe streets to help eliminate fatal crashes.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates as more information becomes available.
