GLOUCESTER, Mass. — New photos of the Lily Jean obtained by Boston 25 News show, for the first time, the fishing vessel as it rests on the sea floor off the coast of Cape Ann. The boat sank in January during freezing temperatures, resulting in the deaths of seven crew members.
The photos, verified by family members, appear to show damage to the Lily Jean’s hull, including a large dent and possible scrape. Several family members tell Boston 25 the photos raise questions about what happened to the Lily Jean, but they are split on whether to salvage the vessel to aid investigators.
The US Coast Guard and National Transportation Safety Board are currently investigating the sinking. Officials have not yet identified a cause. Boston 25 reached out to the Coast Guard and NTSB for comment on the photos and an update on the investigation. The NTSB referred all questions to the Coast Guard. The Coast Guard did not immediately respond to Boston 25’s request.
It’s not known how the damage seen in the photos occurred, or if it played any role in the sinking.
On Wednesday, it was revealed the US Navy would not attempt to raise the Lily Jean. Keri Rousanidis lost her brother John in the tragedy. She disagrees with the decision.

“The reason I believe raising the Lily Jean is so important is that the vessel itself is the most important piece of physical evidence,” Rousanidis shared with Boston 25. “A forensic examination could allow experts to inspect the hull, structure, machinery and any damage directly.”
While the families all say they want answers, they don’t all agree on the next steps. A relative of Paul Beal, Sr., and his son, Paul Beal, Jr., told Boston 25 their family would prefer the Lily Jean and its crew be allowed to rest in peace at sea. They support the Navy’s decision not to salvage the boat.
On Wednesday, State Sen. Bruce Tarr expressed disappointment with the Navy’s decision.
“We will continue to pursue all available avenues to obtain any possible information that can shed light on the cause of the sinking,” Tarr said in a statement.
The annual Fishermen’s Memorial Service will be held Saturday, August 8, at 5:00 pm in Gloucester. Family members of the Lily Jean crew tell Boston 25 they plan to attend to honor the memory of their loved ones.
