New Hampshire family searching for answers after pregnant cow dies from gunshot wound

WEARE, N.H. — A family in New Hampshire is turning to the public for help tracking down the person who fatally shot their pregnant cow.

In a Facebook post, Weare resident Lisa Ilsley wrote, “You must have skipped hunter safety classes, where they teach you to be absolutely sure of your target. Despite color, I sit here tonight wondering how you could possibly mistake a 1200-pound cow for a deer.”

Ilsley said the beloved cow, Cookie, suffered a gunshot wound to the abdomen on Oct. 30. She died hours later.

“We did everything we could to save her. With heavy hearts, we laid her to rest this evening,” she wrote in the post.

Cookie was said to be the best cow in the family’s milking herd. She was also due to give birth in December.

The incident happened in the area of South Sugar Hill Road and Al’s Drive.

The New Hampshire Fish and Game Law Enforcement Division is urging anyone with information to call 1-800-344-4262.
