BOSTON — The Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) has installed new environmental protection measures at M Street Beach in South Boston due to the uptick in piping plovers, officials announced Friday.
Approximately 300 feet of straw wattle has been installed along the street edge of the beach and a section of the beach has been closed off to the public.
Piping plovers, a state and federally-listed endangered species, have nested and hatched eggs along the public beaches in the Boston neighborhood.
M Street Beach’s primary access ramps remain open.
These protective measures are in place from Friday June 23 to July 21.
This is a developing story. Check back for updates as more information becomes available.
