New England’s 2026 fall foliage forecast is in, and leaf peepers will love the outlook

DEDHAM, Mass. — Leaf peepers in New England may have a lot to look forward to this fall.

Forests across the region are in much better shape than they were a year ago, setting the stage for what experts say could be a long and spectacular foliage season, according to Yankee Magazine’s 2026 Fall Foliage Forecast. After drought conditions dulled and shortened last year’s display, a snowy winter, ample spring moisture, and consistent summer rainfall have helped trees recover across much of the region.

Foliage expert Jim Salge says the healthier forests could lead to brighter colors and a more gradual change, allowing peak foliage to linger longer as it moves from northern New England toward the coast.

“Our early call for 2026: A slow start could set the stage for a long, spectacular foliage season,” Salge said.

The forecast suggests northern New England will see color first, while warmer conditions may delay peak foliage in southern areas, extending opportunities for leaf peepers throughout the region. Experts say sunny days and cool nights could help produce especially vivid reds this season.

While some coastal communities still face lingering drought concerns, forest health across much of New England has improved significantly. Yankee Magazine notes that widespread insect or fungal damage is currently limited, though beech leaf disease remains an ongoing concern.

“The forest has done its part; now we just need the fall weather to cooperate as expected,” Salge said.

The national outlook is more mixed, with variable conditions expected across the Mid-Atlantic, Upper Midwest, Pacific Northwest, and Mountain West due to heat, drought, and wildfire concerns.

For New England travelers, Salge’s advice is simple: rather than targeting a single peak weekend, consider following the color south as the season progresses.

“Rather than picking one weekend and hoping to hit the peak, you may find that this is the year to take your time, enjoy the season, and follow the color as it moves across the region,” Salge said.
