WAREHAM, Mass. — The town of Wareham has “rebranded” itself to show tourists they don’t have to go all the way to Cape Cod for a getaway.

Wareham announced a new campaign Wednesday called “It’s Better Before the Bridges” to highlight the town’s “natural beauty, diversity, and business-friendly community.”

Town Administrator Derek Sullivan says they’re tired of being a rest stop and ready to be a destination.

Many residents told Boston 25 News reporter Elysia Rodriguez they think their town often gets forgotten.

“I think we definitely should be showcased, Wareham is a beautiful town," said Mary Labonte, Mamma Mary’s Italian Cafe.

Some say they love living in Wareham and are proud of what they have, but that doesn’t mean they support distancing themselves from the Cape.

“No, it don’t know, maybe I just am old school,” said Mikki Vasquez.

Sullivan says the change is more than just a slogan. “We are looking to rebrand and expand the town and let them know it’s a great place to live, not just to visit to create jobs and manufacturing. We have a great low tax rate that we think is beneficial for businesses that want to relocate here,” he said.

The town’s historic slogan is the Gateway to Cape Cod. Sullivan says its history isn’t entirely going away.

“That’s part of our history and obviously we honor our history and a big place that place that made us who we are today, we are not doing away with the gateway to Cape Cod the lighthouses with the Gateway to Cape Cod, they are staying there, they are a part of our culture,” he said.
