BOSTON — Meet Lark, a five-month-old Siberian Husky who is recovering after suffering devastating injuries from being hit by a car.
Lark is now in the care of the MSPCA-Angell, where veterinary teams are helping her heal while efforts continue to locate her owner and identify the driver involved in the collision.
Lark was brought to Angell Animal Medical Center by Boston Animal Control late in the evening on August 7.
During her initial examination, veterinarians discovered that she had suffered a severe degloving injury to one of her back legs, a traumatic injury in which the skin and underlying tissue are torn away, leaving the limb exposed.
“On Lark’s physical exam, we found that she had sustained a severe degloving injury to one of her back legs,” said Dr. David Carabetta, a criticalist at MSPCA-Angell in Boston. “This means the skin and some of the underlying tissue had been torn away, leaving much of her limb exposed.”
After evaluating her injuries, the veterinary team immediately focused on stabilizing Lark and keeping her comfortable.
She was given pain medication and antibiotics to help prevent infection, while her injured leg was thoroughly cleaned and bandaged.
X-rays revealed an extensive fracture, and veterinarians determined that the damage was too severe to save her leg.
After weighing the treatment options, the team concluded that amputation was the best course of action for the young puppy.
“We’re thankful she survived this injury and was brought into our care,” said MSPCA-Angell Vice President of Animal Protection Mike Keiley. “We’re fortunate to have veterinary teams across our hospitals and community clinics whose expertise allows us to perform advanced diagnostics, carefully weigh every option, and determine a treatment plan with the animal’s best interest in mind.”
Lark underwent surgery on August 10 at the MSPCA-Angell Larson Kelly Community Clinic in Boston. She will remain under the organization’s care as she recovers from the procedure and adjusts to life on three legs.
At the same time, the MSPCA-Angell and Boston Animal Control are working to find Lark’s owner and gather information about the crash.
According to the organizations, the driver involved did not report the collision, despite Massachusetts law requiring drivers to report such incidents.
“It’s possible Lark has a family out there who’s been searching for her,” Keiley said. “If that’s the case, we want them to know she’s safe and receiving the care she needs.”

Lark will remain subject to the required seven-day stray hold. If no owner comes forward during that period, the MSPCA-Angell plans to begin looking for an adopter once she is medically cleared.
“If an owner doesn’t come forward after the required seven-day stray hold, we’ll begin the search for an adopter once she’s medically cleared,” Keiley said.
