DANVERS, Mass. — A mother and toddler were taken to the hospital after a fire broke out at an apartment in Danvers late Wednesday night.
Crews responding to a report of a fire at an apartment complex on River Drive before midnight were greeted by heavy smoke, according to Danvers Fire Chief Robert Amerault.
Amerault said firefighters entered the home and found a mother and a 2-year-old boy suffering from smoke inhalation.
Both residents were escorted outside, where the mother collapsed.
“There was smoke all over the mother’s face...The mother collapsed outside the apartment door,” Amerault said. “Two of our firefighters carried them out.”
The mother and son were taken to a local hospital for treatment. There was no immediate word on their condition.
Everyone else in the building managed to escape to safety.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
