FALL RIVER, MASS. — The quick actions of Fall River police helped rescue a suicidal man from frigid waters Tuesday night.

Around 6:45 p.m., police received a report a man had jumped into the water near Battleship Cove.

Police found the apparently suicidal man lying on rocks just behind the Heritage Park visitor’s center and already showing signs of hypothermia.

One of the responding officers jumped down from the boardwalk to reach the male and tied a rescue rope around his torso. Two bystanders helped the officers successfully pull him to safety.

Bodycam video from the scene shows officers shouting for supplies to help the violently shivering man.

“Get as many blankets as you can!” one officer can be heard yelling.

Several officers then picked the man up and carried him around a quarter-mile to an ambulance.

In a statement, Fall River Police Chief Kelly Furtado thanked the following people and officers: Sgt. Dwaine Cabeceiras, Sgt. Derek Oagles, Officers Matthew Camara, Wanda Otero-Sanchez, Zachary Strong, Avantay Pereira, David Claudio, Nicholas Mello, Matthew Cabral-Barboza, Garrett Nelson, Joe Bailey, and Lorymar Devarie.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates as more information becomes available.
