BROOKLINE, Mass. — A 50-year-old man was killed and his wife seriously injured in a multi-vehicle crash on Route 9 that injured three other people in Brookline on Sunday, police said.

A preliminary investigation found that the driver of the vehicle may have suffered a medical episode which led to the crash, police said Monday.

When officers arrived, they learned that one vehicle had struck several cars, drove off the road and struck a tree, police said.

Two people were trapped inside the vehicle. Emergency crews were able to extract the occupants, who were taken by ambulance to Beth Israel Medical Center.

Two other vehicles that were struck, with three people from those vehicles taken by ambulance with “much less serious injuries,” police said.

The crash remains under investigation.
