ROWLEY, Mass — A man died after he was pulled from a burning home in Rowley early Friday morning, officials said.
Firefighters responding to a report of a blaze at 2 Railroad Avenue shortly after 4 a.m. observed smoke and flames within the home, according to the Rowley Fire Department.
When crews made entry into the home, they found an older man inside. The man, whose name hasn’t been released, was pronounced dead at a local hospital.
Investigators noted that there were no working smoke alarms in the home.
In a statement, Rowley Fire Chief Mark Emery said, “The first firefighters into the home did not hear smoke alarms,” Chief Emery said. “Working smoke alarms are your first line of defense against a fire. Be sure you have them installed on every level of the residence, and please take a few minutes to check on older relatives, friends, and neighbors to see if they need help installing, testing, or maintaining their alarms.”
The three-alarm fire doesn’t appear suspicious, but the exact cause remains under investigation, according to Emery.
The State Fire Marshal’s Office and state troopers assigned to the Essex District Attorney’s Office are assisting Rowley officials with the investigation.
