NEWBURYPORT, Mass. — An investigation is underway after a vessel that belongs to the Newburyport Fire Department sank in the Merrimack River overnight, officials said. according to Chief Christopher J. LeClaire.
The high-speed aluminum fire boat sank while docked at Cashman Park, according Newburyport Fire Chief Christopher J. LeClaire and City Marshal Mark Murray.
The boat is named Raven II, and it is the second Newburyport fire boat to be named in honor of Newburyport Firefighter Tony Raven, who died after battling a fire on Chapel Street in 2016.
A pedestrian walking in the area early Friday morning noticed the vessel partially submerged by the port and immediately reported to the Newbury police.
According to police, high tide occurs at 2:09 a.m. in Newburyport with low tide anticipated at just before 9 a.m., and an operation to fully raise the boat and remove it from the water was scheduled for 8:30 a.m.
Investigators will also determine if the boat is suitable to return to service.
