GORHAM, N.H. — An injured 18-year-old from Massachusetts was rescued about one-half of a mile from Mount Washington’s summit yesterday afternoon.
Andrew Nelson is a resident of Topsfield who was hiking with eight friends.
While on the Tucker Ravine Trail, he suffered a lower leg injury and could not put any weight on the hurt leg.
The New Hampshire Fish and Game Department received a 911 call around 3 p.m. on Tuesday reporting an injured man on the trail.
While waiting for the rescue crew, he attempted to make his way back towards the summit by hopping and crawling.
Nelson “used sheer, grit and determination to continue moving,” Fish and Game said in a release.
He made it 0.3 miles by the time responders arrived.
Rescuers carried him for the remaining 0.2 miles.
When they arrived at the summit, Nelson was driven down the Mount Washington Auto Road and transferred to the Gorham Ambulance.
He refused transport to Androscoggin Valley Hospital in Berlin, instead opting to receive treatment at his home.
