ERVING, Mass. — An injured bear cub was rescued from the side of Rt. 2 in Erving on Thursday evening after sustaining a significant leg and foot injury.
Officer Bryant and Sgt. Paicos with Erving Police Department responded to State Road along Rt. 2 where a protective mama bear was concerned for her injured cub who was in need of human care for a chance of recovery.
The officers were able to safely secure the cub with assistance from the Shelbourne Control dispatch center which made contact with a biologist in Hubbardton, Mass.
The cub was turned over to MASS Wildlife and transported to Tufts Animal Hospital in Grafton for treatment where he will hopefully move on to a rehabilitation center in NH, according to police.
The rehabilitation center will give the cub the best opportunity to heal with the hope of being released back into the wild within a year, said police.
