Here are the highest-paid state employees in Massachusetts

Massachusetts’ state payroll topped $9 billion in 2022, with most of the top earners hailing from the University of Massachusetts system.

Michael Collins, the senior vice president for health sciences and Chancellor of the UMass Chan Medical School, tops the list with an income of $1.289,996.13 last year. He has been the Bay State’s top earner since 2017.

Terence Flotte, Executive Deputy Chancellor and Provost of the UMass Chan Medical School comes in second place with a $1,139,628 income.

UMass head basketball coach Frank Martin led the Minutemen to an 18-13 record in his first year. Martin replaced former head coach Matt McCall on the bench and as the state’s third highest-paid employee after being paid $1,133,846.29 in 2022.

Michael Green, Vice Provost for Strategic Research Initiatives, Director of the UMass Cancer Center and Co-Director of the Li Weibo Institute for Rare Diseases Research was the fourth highest paid with a $846,549.48 income.

UMass football head coach Donald Brown also lands in the top 5. UMass finished the 2022 season with a 1-11 record in his second stint in Amherst. Brown previously served as head coach from 2004 to 2008, during which Brown led the team to its best record over a 5-year period in school history.

Mathew McCall was the sixth highest-paid state employee last year despite being dismissed as UMass’ head basketball coach prior to last season.
