First responders raced through snow-covered roads Tuesday to rescue a child trapped underneath a tree in Derry.

The child was reportedly playing outside while a nearby parent was clearing snow when the tree came tumbling down, according to the Derry Fire Department.

Members of the Derry Fire and Police Departments resorted to using chainsaws, shovels and even their bare hands to clear away the snow and branches pinning the child.

The child received only minor injuries and was said to be in “good spirits”, according to the Derry Fire Department.

After 19 minutes, the 16 firefighters and three firefighters were able to pry the child from the toppled tree and transport them to a nearby hospital.

No other individuals were injured.
