BROOKLINE, Mass. — About 30 people in Brookline are looking for a new place to live after a fast-moving fire ripped through their apartment building on Monday afternoon.

The fire was first reported around 4:15 p.m. in the third floor of the building at 16 Hamilton Road, near Commonwealth Avenue.

Firefighters from Boston, Cambridge and several other communities rushed in to assist the Brookline Fire Department.

The flames were knocked down by 5:30 p.m.

“Most of the occupants self-evacuated,” said Chief Keith Flaherty with the Brookline Fire Department. “It was a fast spreading fire located on the third floor and the cockloft.”

The building is home to several BU graduate students who evacuated from a third floor unit.

“I ran inside. I told my roommate there’s some smoke coming out, let’s go downstairs,” one of them said. “We grabbed important documents and came out.”

No injuries were reported.

Fire crews remained on scene through Monday night keeping an eye out for hot spots.

Cambridge Fire also responded to assist Brookline firefighters.

A cause has not yet been determined.
