NEEDHAM, Mass. — One person is dead after a 4-alarm fire inside a large Needham home on Christmas Eve morning sent smoke pouring over the neighborhood.

Seventy-five firefighters from seven towns battled haze and smoke after the three-story home on 28 Woodworth Road in Needham caught fire around 5:00 a.m. Wednesday.

Two people inside the home were able to make it out.

Initially, one person was reported missing, but fire officials have confirmed that one person has died as a result of the fire.

“On behalf of the Needham Fire Department, I want to express our deepest condolences to the family that lost a loved one today,” said Needham Chief Thomas Conroy. “It’s just a heart-wrenching event for them and the community.”

Towns of Boston, Brookline, Dedham, Natick, Newton, Norwood, Milton, Wellesley, and Westwood provided mutual aid.

Massachusetts State Fire Marshal urged residents to check their fire alarms and smoke detectors.

“We haven’t determined the cause of this fire yet, but we know that tragedies like this one are most common in the winter months,” said State Fire Marshal Davine. “Please be sure you have working smoke and carbon monoxide alarms on every level of your home and a practiced escape plan in the event of an emergency.”

Members of the State Fire Marshal’s Office, Massachusetts State Police, and Needham police and fire are investigating the incident.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates as more information becomes available.
