Police: Ipswich man drowns in waters off Plum Island Sound

IPSWICH, Mass. — Police are investigating after a man drowned near an Ipswich yacht club Wednesday afternoon.

Officers responding to the area of N. Ridge Road around 3 p.m. were notified by workers at the Ipswich Bay Yacht Club that a man was struggling in the water near the yacht club’s mooring area, according to Ipswich Police.

A marine unit quickly located the man and pulled him to shore at the yacht club’s dock, where they performed life-saving measures.

The man was transported to Beverly Hospital and was later pronounced dead.

He is being identified only as a 72-year-old Ipswich resident from the Great Neck section of town.

Authorities say although the death appears to be an accidental drowning, they, along with the Essex County DA’s Office, will be investigating.

No further information was immediately available.
