DPH launches investigation after 93-year-old woman in adult daycare program drowns during beach trip

BOSTON — The state Department of Public Health has launched an investigation after a 93-year-old woman who was with an adult daycare group drowned Monday while swimming in the water off a beach in Boston, officials said.

The woman was at the beach with an adult daycare group called 2nd Home Adult Day Health Care in Watertown, state police earlier confirmed.

The facility, 2nd Home Adult Day Health Care, reported the woman’s death to the Department of Public Health, officials said.

Troopers responded to a report of a person in distress in Castle Island’s Pleasure Bay around 12 p.m. Monday.

When troopers arrived, they learned a client of an adult daycare program had inadvertently swam into deeper water during a supervised trip to the beach, according to state police.

When the woman realized the depth of the water she was in, she panicked and yelled for help before becoming submerged, state police said.

Lifeguards and friends of the woman pulled her to shore, where they immediately began performing CPR, state police said. She was later taken by ambulance to Boston Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead.

2nd Home Adult Day Health Care is licensed by the Department of Public Health as an adult day health program, and renewed its two-year license to operate the adult day health program on Aug. 30, 2022.

As a licensed program, the facility is subject to DPH regulations, which require licensed programs to report serious incidents and accidents to the department, including “a death that is unanticipated and not related to the natural course of the participant’s illness or underlying condition, or that is the result of an error or other incident as specified in guidelines of the Department.”
