LAWRENCE, Mass. — A dog found living in a Lawrence storage unit with no heat needs a “hospice home” to spend the rest of her days.
The dog named Lambchop was found severely underweight and covered in matted fur. She is blind and deaf, missing most of her teeth.
Lawrence police are investigating the case.
Lambchop’s owner agreed to sign her over to Sweet Paws Rescue. She has since been groomed and seen a veterinarian, who has given her medicine for her arthritis.
“It literally breaks my heart. People are awful that they would treat dogs that way,” said Sam Upton, Lambchop’s foster mom. “I just can’t imagine you’re in this scary dark place and then somebody picks you up and shaves you down.”
Upton didn’t hesitate to scoop up Lambchop, providing a warm, loving home as Sweet Paws searches for a long-term “hospice home.”
While Sweet Paws Rescue says Lambchop is an elderly poodle mix, her exact age is not known.
“She and other dogs like her are just looking for people who are willing to help make them comfortable and just do their best to give them the very best last couple years of their life,” Upton said. “You can’t obviously change the whole world, but when you put your whole effort to one dog it changes their whole world.”
Anyone interested in adopting Lambchop should email info@sweetpawsrescue.org. A potential adopter must have a flexible schedule and live near Haverhill, Mass., for Lambchop’s veterinary visits.
“She doesn’t mind being held and kissed and loved, but I think more than anything she just likes the soft bed to lay in,” Upton said of Lambchop.
