BRISTOL, NH — A diver exploring a river near Newfound Lake made an unexpected discovery this week when they came across a grenade underwater, according to New Hampshire State Police.
State police said the device was found Thursday and reported to authorities.
A bomb technician responded to the scene and safely recovered the grenade with assistance from the Bristol Police Department and New Hampshire Fish and Game.
The grenade was later removed and sent for destruction, officials said.
State police noted that bomb technicians are trained to handle explosive devices in a variety of environments, including waterways.
“Our Bomb Techs aren’t just trained for land-based operations. They’re equipped with specialized maritime skills, too,” New Hampshire State Police said in a statement.
Authorities are reminding the public that anyone who encounters a potential explosive device should not touch, move, or attempt to recover it.
