HINGHAM, Mass. — Police are searching for a driver involved in a road rage shooting that unfolded near the Hingham Public Library on Thursday afternoon.
Officers responded to the area of the library on Leavitt Street shortly after 4:20 p.m. following reports of a shooting involving two vehicles.
Investigators say the passenger in one of the vehicles fired two shots during an altercation on Route 228, not far from the library. Police believe the confrontation may have started miles earlier before escalating near the busy public area.
According to police, the gunfire did not strike anyone. However, the passenger who fired the shots suffered a non-life-threatening injury and remained at the scene until officers arrived. He was later taken to a hospital for treatment.
The other driver involved in the incident, who police say was the target of the gunfire, left the scene before officers arrived. Authorities are actively searching for that driver and are working to piece together exactly what led up to the shooting.
Residents expressed shock that the violence happened so close to the library, a popular destination for families and children.
“It’s disturbing, because there’s a lot of children that go in and out of that library and innocent people that all they want to do is check out a book and there’s bullets flying in the parking lot,” one resident said.
“It’s kind of scary. It’s Hingham, right? Pretty peaceful place,” another resident added.
Police say they expect criminal charges to be filed as the investigation continues. Investigators also said they are confident they will soon be able to identify and locate the other driver involved in the incident.
Anyone with information is urged to contact Hingham police.
