Breaking Grounds Café has given people with disabilities a space for success for nearly a decade, now they’re closing shop, but the community is making sure everyone behind the counter knows just how much they mean to them.
“The customers are part of the family here too,” said Assistant Manager Kristen Martin.
Martin started off as a regular customer, later taking on the role of assistant manager. Martin has even trained some of the staff over the years and says there’s a unique story behind everyone taking your order.
“Watching someone that struggled with a skill being able to then accomplish and do it perfectly, like perfect every time,” said Martin. “A lot of them might have a family member who has a disability so that’s why they come here to support us.”
Although rising costs with rent, labor and supplies contributed to the shop’s closure, the mission continues.
Northeast Arc says it’s keeping this space open for its vocational training programs and they’re open to local partnerships that will ensure opportunities live on.
Friday is the last day for customers to grab a cup of joe!
