BOSTON — Crews are working to repair a major water main break in South Boston that left some homes and businesses flooded on Wednesday night.
A spokesperson with Boston Water and Sewer told Boston 25 News that the issue involved a ruptured 12-inch main at the intersection of Dorchester and West Eighth streets.
The area quickly filled with water leading to several road closures. Officials added that the water main repairs could take up to four more hours and then crews will start repairing the road.
Fire officials estimate that several homes and businesses may have been flooded with as much as a foot of water.
Water service to at least 25 nearby buildings was impacted.
“My wife was giving my first kid a tub. She saw nothing. A minute later, I tossed my second kid in. Within 20 seconds, I’m like, something’s not right about this water,” said neighbor Alex Gilman. “All of a sudden it was brown.”
The water that gushed from the ground caused a portion of the street to buckle.
Crews are excavating the roadway to get to the broken water main so they can fix it.
This is a developing story. Check back for updates as more information becomes available.
