Crew member rescued after falling overboard off Cape Cod, Coast Guard says

PROVINCETOWN, Mass. — A fishing vessel crew member was rescued Saturday afternoon after falling overboard in waters off Cape Cod, according to the U.S. Coast Guard.

According to the Coast Guard Sector Southeastern New England Facebook page, they received a report just before 1 PM that a crew member had gone overboard from the fishing vessel Western Edge.

The Coast Guard immediately issued an alert and deployed all available crews for a search, including a boat crew from Coast Guard Station Provincetown and an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter from Coast Guard Air Station Cape Cod. The Coast Guard vessel known as the Melvin Bell also shifted from patrol duties to assist.

Around 2:47 p.m., the fishing vessel Seal Jr. reported spotting the missing crew member in the water.

Coast Guard helicopter crew members quickly responded, deploying a rescue swimmer into the ocean to assist the person, who was then hoisted aboard the helicopter and rescued.

According to the Coast Guard, the individual was suffering from hypothermia and is being transported to a local hospital for treatment.

No additional information about the crew member’s condition was immediately available.
