Cooling centers open in Boston ahead of heat

BOSTON — Boston Centers for Youth and Families has opened more than a dozen “cooling centers”  after Mayor Michelle Wu declared a heat emergency in the city.

One of those locations is the Tynan Elementary School at 650 East Fourth Street in South Boston.

Most locations are open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. throughout the heat advisory.

Any visitors must abide by the following: sign in with your name and contact information, wear a face mask, bring your own water bottle and limit the number of belongings you bring into the designated cooling center locations to one small bag.

When a cooling center is activated by city officials in Boston, all are welcome to come into the different locations across the city to cool off.

A full list of centers can be found at boston.gov/heat. The city says that due to “rising COVID-19 case count” the use of masks in cooling centers is strongly recommended.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates as more information becomes available.
